We are currently seeking Presentation Proposal Applications

We are excited to announce The Houston Eating Disorders Specialists (HEDS) conference Inclusion in Recovery: Exploring the Margins of Eating Disorders on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the Norris Conference Center in CityCentre.

The HEDS 2019 Conference Committee invites you to submit a presentation proposal OR poster presentation for our upcoming conference on February 23, 2019. Professional presentations form the backbone of our conference, and we look forward to a diverse and rich curriculum selection. New this year will be time devoted to poster presentations based on research or educational topics as well. The conference will be limited to professionals only. We are excited about our two keynote speakers, Linda Bacon, PhD and Andrew Walen, LCSW-C, LICSW, CEDS, and conference presentations.

The committee is seeking presentations that directly relate to the theme “Inclusion in Recovery.”  Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to: eating disorders in males, LGBTQ+ populations, binge eating disorder, Health At Every Size®, trauma, athletes, and woman over 40.

Our Keynote Speakers:

Linda Bacon, PhD

Author of Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight and Co-Author of Body Respect: What conventional Health Books Get Wrong, Leave Out, or Just Plain Fail to Understand about Weight.

Dr. Linda Bacon is fostering a global transformation to a more just world, where all bodies are valued, respected, and supported in compassionate self-care. A professor and researcher, for almost two decades, Dr. Bacon has taught courses in social justice, health, weight and nutrition; she has also conducted federally funded studies on health and weight and published in the top scientific journals.

Bacon earned her PhD in physiology from the University of California Davis, where she currently serves as an Associate Nutritionist.  She holds addition graduate degrees in psychology and exercise metabolism.   With a rare dual perspective combining academic expertise and clinical experience, Bacon is adept at providing a link between scientific research and practical application.

Andrew Walen, LCSW-C, LICSW, CEDS

Founder and CEO The Body Image Therapy Center (located in Maryland and DC) Author of Man Up to Eating Disorders

Andrew Walen is a psychotherapist specializing in eating disorders, body image, anxiety, depression, self-harm, and self-esteem. He currently serves a President of the executive board for the National Association for Males with Eating Disorders (NAMED). He was also a founding board member of the Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA). He has appeared on The Today Show, was featured in the New York Times, and interviewed for film documentaries, television, radio as an expert in the field of eating disorders and body image.

Walen is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Social Work in Nashville. He also is a published singer/songwriter and performs regionally.

Conference Attendee Information

We are so grateful that you have decided to attend the 2017 HEDS Conference: Freedom in Recovery.  We are looking forward to a wonderful day of education and encouragement as we learn from local and national eating disorders experts.  As a reminder, the conference will be held this Saturday, February 18 at the Norris Conference Center (816 Town & Country Blvd #210, Houston, TX 77024).

Ample free parking is available in the garage attached to the Conference Center.  For direct access to the Conference Center, park on the 3rd floor of the parking garage and follow the signs to the Norris Conference Center.  (For those entering from Hotel Sorella or street level, please be aware that the Conference Center is located on level 2 – hotel lobby level.)

All registrants will need to pick-up their conference materials at check-in.  Early check-in will be available on Friday (February 17) from 2pm-5pm at 2200 North Loop West, Suite 123, Houston, TX 77018. (Call 713-301-5750 for directions.)  Day-of check-in will begin at 8am at the main entrance to the Norris Conference Center.

Continental breakfast will be served at 8am and the first morning session will begin promptly at 8:30am.  In addition to breakfast, 2 snacks and lunch will be provided for all conference attendees.  For those who desire, a quiet room will be available at lunch.  The final sessions will conclude at 5:15, but participants are welcome to enjoy the facility until 6pm for networking.

Please be advised that the Conference Center can be a bit cold so a light sweater or jacket is recommended.  Casual/ business casual attire is appropriate.

Abstracts, objectives, and handouts for all sessions can be accessed through the HEDS Conference Secure Website (http://www.houstoneds.org/heds-2017-conference-information-and-handouts-for-attendees/). The access code can be obtained at the conference. In an effort to save paper, these materials will only be available through this website.

The 2017 Houston Eating Disorders Specialists (HEDS) Conference, Freedom in Recovery, brings together professionals, researchers, educators, and members of the community, including those in recovery and their loved ones, to connect and learn from one another in a warm and welcoming environment.

The 2017 HEDS Conference will be held at the Norris Conference Center in CityCentre, February 18, 2017. Sessions led by eating disorder experts will increase your knowledge and skills—as community members or treatment professionals—whether you are a first-time or returning attendee. Sessions are designed to address three levels of conference attendees: community members, early career clinicians, and intermediate/advanced clinicians.
