Objectives:

  1. Clinicians will learn strategies to teach caregivers that the emotional struggles associated with the eating disorder require emotion-based solutions.
  2. Clinicians will be able to help caregivers identify their own approaches to emotions through the use of animal metaphors for emotions and caregiving styles.
  3. Clinicians will be able to help caregivers cultivate an appreciation for validation as an essential caregiver skills.

It is a myth that caregivers, especially parents, are to blame for their loved one’s eating disorder. This presentation is built on the assumption that family involvement is critical to eating disorder recovery.  The Tenets of Emotion-Focused Family Therapy will be introduced and skills of emotion coaching will be taught through emphasis on validation as a foundation for all advanced caregiver skills.  

Presenter:

Dr. Anna Brown is a licensed clinical psychologist and primary therapist for Eating Recovery Center of The Woodlands. Dr. Brown has had a specific interest in improving the treatment of eating disorders since college.
