Strategies for Treating ARFID: Discovering New Foods Together

    Date: August 4, 2020, 11:30 am – 1:00 pm

Speaker: Leah L. Graves RDN, LDN, CEDRD-S, FAED

While symptoms of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) frequently begin early in childhood, patients often present to eating disorders treatment during latency, adolescence and sometimes as young adults. The resulting gap between onset and specialty care results in significant medical and nutritional co-morbidity and risk. ARFID also substantially impacts quality of life. Rigid eating patterns can negatively influence social and cultural development and experience. Patients and their families have frequently been working for significant periods of time to identify a diagnosis and obtain care. They often report that their concerns have not been validated or addressed. This workshop will provide current conceptualization for ARFID identification, along with the most current recommendations for treatment intervention across the continuum of care. Specific guidance to contrast the needs of ARFID patients within the eating disorders milieu will be addressed.

    Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this workshop, participant will be able to:

Describe at least 2 differences between ARFID and Anorexia Nervosa
List the 3 proposed subcategories for ARFID and understand where they may overlap
Identify at least one strategy for treatment for each subtype of ARFID that can be applied within scope of care
This will be a virtual event held on Zoom.
